Back in June of this year Micron, Owners of the Lexar brand of memory cards, announced it would be discontinuing manufacture of its retail removeable storage business to concentrate on higher value markets and channels. This was a bit of a blow to those of us who use Lexar memory cards and, as one of the biggest manufacturers of quality cards along with the likes of Sandisk could, have left the top end lack of competition open to price hikes due to limited choice.
Good news though, the Lexar brand has been bought by Chinese company Longsys. Although most of their sales primarily happen in China, with the acquisition of the Lexar brand the company will gain a greater hold in the U.S. and western markets, and as for the continued quality of products the following statement seems to uphold their desire to keep the brand as a chief competitor.
“We are very honoured to acquire the Lexar brand,” said Huabo Cai, CEO of Longsys Electronics Limited. “Lexar has built a great brand name and our vision is to make it even greater. Existing customers can rest assured that the innovative solutions and excellent support that they have experienced from Lexar will continue. The mission to make Lexar the go-to brand for high-performance removable storage continues, and we will expand upon it to offer even more compelling solutions as the age of wireless and big-data impact the consumer storage markets.”
Longsys has been involved in flash storage for 18 years and has a rapidly growing global business for its products, and with the Lexar brand under its belt they are going to move forward in this area. For those of us photographers who use Lexar cards or maybe will consider using them in the future the big question is, will that quality remain consistent? Only time will tell, for the time being though, this is great news.
